Home Remedies for Cradle Cap, Natural Remedy

People believe that cradle cap gets cured on its own as the age progresses but in some cases it can affect a person even in adulthood, home remedies for cradle cap are easy and effective treatments to cure the problem completely and are suitable and gentle remedies for a young child's skin. Cradle cap is yellowish and patchy skin rash which occurs on the scalp of newly born babies. This rash is greasy in texture and is scaly and crusty, it is not itchy and does not bother the baby. It can appear at other locations than scalp too and often more prominently around ears, eyebrows and eyelids. If it occurs at locations other than scalp then medically it is referred as seborrhic dermatitis rather than cradle cap. Generally it is mild infection but if accompanied by certain other types of symptoms then it needs medical intervention. Home remedies for cradle cap are potent and effective treatments to cure the problem without allowing it to cause any complications.

Medical experts are of not in agreement with exact cause of the problem but two popular beliefs are that it is caused due to fungal infection or due to overactive sebaceous gland. Cradle cap is not caused by viral or bacterial infection, allergies or due to poor hygiene. The use of antibiotics by the mother destroys good bacteria in the infant's body along with bad bacteria, antibiotic doses given to the child in the first week after its birth also cause destruction of good bacteria allowing fungal infection to settle in. Overactive sebaceous glands in the infant's body, due to presence of mother's hormone, are other popularly believed cause of cradle cap.

Home remedies for cradle cap are effective treatments and can relieve the problem caused by any reason. Initially cradle cap appears as red scaly rash on the scalp, after few days the scales accumulate to form thick yellowish plaques. These plaques appear like a thick layer over scalp which covers the entire scalp. Hair fall in the affected region is also a symptom of cradle cap. If these patches appear on other parts of the body too like behind the ears or eyelids, or groin than these are called seborrhic dermatitis and not cradle cap. If symptoms of cradle cap accompany fungal ear infection, oral thrush, persistent diaper rash or bleeding or cracking of the skin then it needs immediate medical attention. Home remedies for cradle cap can relieve the problem very effectively and without causing any irritation to soft skin of the baby or any side effects.

Rub olive oil on the scalp of the baby and leave it for 20 minutes. Once scalp has soaked the oil and of baby has hairs on the head comb the hair with fine comb in opposite direction. Using lice comb is better than normal comb. Later wash off the oil with baby shampoo. Repeat this remedy till yellowish rash completely falls off. This is one of the very effective home remedies for cradle cap.

Application and gentle massage of tea tree oil is also one of the useful home remedies for cradle cap. Tea tree oil possesses anti-fungal properties and works wonderfully to clear the infection if occurring due to activity of fungi, even in the case where cradle cap has occurred due to other reasons using tea tree oil is magical in resolving the problem. Allow the oil to stay for 15-20 minutes after massage and later wash it off or wipe it away with damp towel, repeat this remedy till symptoms subside. It is one of the useful home remedies for cradle cap.

Rub extra virgin coconut oil on the scalp of the baby and comb with a thin and fine comb. Allow the oil to stay overnight and in the morning wash the oil off with shampoo or with plain water and apply gentle brush on the rash to remove the flakes. If practiced regularly this works as one of the effective home remedies for cradle cap.

Take teabags of meadow sweet or comfrey roots and soak them in a bowl of water for just few minutes. Take these bags out and apply on the scalp of the baby on the rash. Let the tea flow out on the skin and direct the tea to all parts of the rash with the help of cotton or clean cloth so that whole rash absorbs the tea. Repeat this two three times in a day and rash will vanish in a short time. It is another one of the effective home remedies for cradle cap.

Take cod liver oil or vitamin E oil and add some milk to it. Massage the baby's scalp with this mixture and allow the mixture to stand on the scalp for 10-15 minutes. Later brush off the skin with a gentle baby brush. Repeat this remedy regularly till symptoms subside. This is another one of the useful home remedies for cradle cap.

Take olive oil and add few drops of lavender oil to it. Massage the scalp with this mixture. Allow the mixture for few minutes on the scalp and later brush the scalp to remove the flakes. Within a short time it can cure the rash completely. This is another one of the wonderful home remedies for cradle cap.
Apply and massage the scalp with almond oil and let it stay overnight. In the morning brush or use clean damp cotton towel to wipe off the flakes. Repeat this treatment for few days to cure the problem completely. Application of petroleum jelly regularly on the scalp and later wiping or brushing it off also works wonderfully for treating the problem in a short time.

While using these home remedies for cradle cap always apply gentle pressure so that it does not cause any irritation to the healthy skin of the baby.
